Cautious approval for Dubai sukuk ambition

Some analysts see the ambition, and especially the goal of overtaking London as the world capital of the sukuk business, as a challenge perhaps too tough even for the emirate’s “can-do” mentality. Mohieddine Kronfol is in a good position to judge. He is the chief investment officer for global sukuk and fixed income business for Franklin Templeton, one of the world’s biggest asset managers with some US$800 billion (Dh2.93 trillion) of funds under management around the globe.

Sukuk Market Will Increase as soon as the Legal Framework is Established

Sukuk will be sued to finance the upcoming Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects according to the financial advisor to the Ministry of Finance, Ahmed Al-Naggar. He made these confirmations during the 2nd Annual PPP Investment Summit held in the capital. The confirmation has been welcomed by stakeholders in the partnership. Waleed Hegazi, partner at Hegazy & Associates said it’s sukuks allow “high rates of return on investments” but calls for the implementation of the sukuk law which will be “a positive step and a quantum leap in establishing Islamic finance.” Conventional banks are also being urged to participate because they have “a social responsibility to finance PPP projects” according to the CEO and managing director of ADI Capital and acting wholesale banking head of National Bank for Development (NBD), Ahmed Al-Masry.

Depth of the financial market need to improve

While the sukuk or the Islamic bond market has been growing rapidly with increasing number of large and liquid issues, the depth of the financial market, especially in the GCC, is not at the level of the developed countries or at a level some global fund managers would ideally like it to be. For that to happen, global asset manager Franklin Templeton Investments believes that the policy makers should concentrate their efforts at developing more non-banking financial services.

Inserting vector graphics into PowerPoint Presentation

The vector graphics is a type of the computer graphics which is based on using primitive geometrical figures such as lines, curves and points to make up various images. In other words, the vector graphics means images made up of vectors. The vector images may vary from simple (for instance, rectangles, triangles, stars and other geometrical shapes) to very complicated. Any picture made up by means of the vector graphics can be used as a background of your PowerPoint presentation.

To be inserted into a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation your Image should be of the Windows Enhanced Metafile format (emf). If your file is of any other format, for example eps, svg, pdf, ai or cdr, you should use a graphics editor in order to convert your image into the emf format. To convert an image into the emf format you can use an EMF converter, for example the Total PDF Converter Program, which is good for converting eps ant other types of files into the emf program. To change the file format, you should open the converting program and drag the chosen file into its interface, and then save the file in the new format.

The emf format is an updated version of the wmf format. Its main advantage is more efficient use of the disk memory. A file saved in the emf format occupies two times less memory than a corresponding wmf file.

Note: Some images may be recognized by the PowerPoint program, but only like bitmapped ones. The so-called “bitmaps”, or “rasters”, represent a different type of graphics. These files are all composed of dots. Here belong various pictures, photos from your camera, or scanned ones. They also include gif images and animations. The disadvantage of the bitmaps is that when you scale them up, their quality decreases. As for the vector images, no matter how you change their scale, they remain good-looking.

After you’ve got your emf file you need to insert it into PowerPoint.

To insert your graphical object into the PowerPoint worksheet you are to follow these steps:

  • Open your PowerPoint presentation.
  • On the Insert tab there is an Illustrations group, where you are to choose the type of the element you want to insert – a picture, a clip art, a photo, a chart and so on.
  • In the opened task pane type the name of the needed file or a word describing it.
  • When you see the list of the found results, click the name of the object you intend to insert.

Then you can drag the needed object into your PowerPoint worksheet with the mouse.

Now you see your image into the PowerPoint worksheet and you need to ungroup it. Otherwise your image stops being an element of vector graphics.
To ungroup the image, select it with the mouse, press the right button and then go to the Group menu and select Ungroup. This will divide the image into a number of components. Thus you become able to change the picture or its parts within the PowerPoint program.

Extracting Vector

Then you will see the following PowerPoint dialogue box: “Do you want to convert it to a Microsoft Office drawing object?” Press “yes”.

Extracting Vector Moreslides

Done! Now you are able to use the vector image in your Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, to choose its color and type of fill, to move or rotate it and to change its size. You can modify the parameters of your vector objects the way you like. It will not make the quality of image worse; vice versa it is the most useful way to work with this type of graphical objects.

The vast majority of professionals using LinkedIn do it. Every day, or week, or month, they trudge into their LinkedIn account and blindly accept invitations from dozens of faceless professionals. Quantity trumps quality, no? “Wait a second, since when did oil and gas professionals want to connect with me?” In the age of LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, everyone knows everyone else, and no one knows anyone. People have over five hundred connections online, but they haven’t had a single conversation with any of them.

Order books ‘probably inflated’

Bond and sukuk issues from the Gulf region in the past few weeks have drawn huge investor order books but then performed poorly in the secondary market — a sign that some of the orders are not as solid as they appear. In order to ensure they obtain part of a new issue, institutional investors are bidding for larger amounts than they actually want, because they assume their bids will be cut when the issuer decides on allocations, traders and analysts say.

Egypt's draft law on Islamic bonds rekindles debate

The approval of a controversial draft law allowing the issuance of Islamic bonds, commonly known as sukuk, has rekindled debate if it contradicts the Islamic Law. According to reports of Egypt’s state-run daily al-Ahram, the bill was approved Tuesday night by the Shura Council, the country’s temporary legislature. Three months ago, the cabinet approved a law regulating sukuk dealings but it was rejected by the country’s prestigious religious institution Al-Azhar over concerns that the new financial system might allow foreigners to own key state assets as well as suspicions about its fixed interests that are not allowed in Islam.

Shekra Blends Crowdfunding with Islamic Finance

At first glance, Islamic finance and crowdfunding have little in common. One takes its mission from the Qur’an, a holy book revealed in the seventh century, and the other only became possible with widespread use of social media.  Dig a little deeper, however, and you will find enough similarities for Islamic finance and crowdfunding to work in tandem. The founders of Shekra, a Shariah-compliant crowdfunding platform that launched late last year, think the two complement each other quite well.

PowerPoint 2010 has given us some awesome looking shapes complete with gorgeous fills and effects. The built-in Quick Styles are beautiful, but sometimes I just need a simple gradient fill. PowerPoint 2007 gives us a good-looking default gradient, but it doesn’t give us a good interface to easily modify or create gradients. So, I figured a quick tutorial on creating gradients in PPT might be worthwhile. These tutorials were created using PowerPoint 2007′s “Office” Theme colors.

It’s also helpful to know that closing and reopening PowerPoint resets the default gradient fill back to the 3-stop gradient based on Accent 1 of the Theme color set. So if you manage to royally mess up your gradients and all you can do is apply ugly gradients (Can you tell I’ve done exactly that more than once?), just close and reopen PowerPoint to get back to ground zero.

1.Insert | Shape, choose Circle, click and drag on the slide to make a big rectangle.

2.Fist Click on you item shape then click on Format tool. All Format tool will appear here where you can customize your shape.

Otherwise Right Click on your shape then click format shape

3.Select the rectangle and, in the Format Shape dialog box, on the Fill tab, click the radio button next to Gradient fill. The rectangle will automatically fill with the default gradient, which is based on Accent 1 of your Theme color set.

The shape with the gradient fill should be on top of the arrow. You should also remove the shape outline from the gradient-filled shape. (To do this, click Drawing Tools Format | Shape Outline | No Outline.)

To make the default gradient fade into the background, follow these steps:

1.Choose Stop 3 from the Gradient stops dropdown.

2.Move the Transparency slider to 100%.
